What is Dry Socket?
Dry socket is the inflammation of the bone and nerve endings below the socket where a tooth has been extracted. Dry socket occurs in 5-10% of extractions and is caused when there is interference in the blood clot formation over the extraction socket. When that bone gets exposed to air, food, and irritants you may experience sharp pain radiating to the ear and an offensive odor in the area of the extraction. Dry socket can be caused by smoking, poor oral hygiene, or even rinsing the extraction area too soon after the extraction. To prevent dry socket, avoid smoking, drink from a straw, and avoid chewing in the area of the extraction for a few days. If you experience symptoms of dry socket, please call for an appointment so your dentist can treat the extraction area and let it heal properly.
