What is Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry is the use of lasers to perform dental procedures and treatments.  Lasers have been adapted to dentistry due to their ability to effectively treat targeted dental tissue while leaving the surrounding area unaffected.  Laser therapy has given dentists another tool to fight periodontal disease.  Periodontal Disease is a bacterial infection that attacks the gum, ligaments, and bone. Bacteria below the gum line causes periodontal pockets.  Deeper pockets can become hard to clean even with regular brushing and flossing.  Left untreated this can lead to tooth and bone loss.  At our Edmond dental office Dr. Jones and our hygienists use lasers to attack periodontal inflammation at a microscopic level.  Our laser uses a tiny beam of concentrated light to destroy otherwise inaccessible bacteria, tartar, and calculus.  Laser therapy has provided us with  an invaluable tool to help promote the dental health of all of our patients.  Other applications of laser therapy in dentistry include the treatment of fever blisters and canker sores.
