Root canals are needed when your tooth's internal soft tissue is damaged.

Treatment: This procedure may require more than one visit. First, an x-ray will be taken to diagnose the extent of the problem. Local anesthesia will be discussed with you prior to use. A small opening is then made in the "crown" of your tooth so that the damaged pulp may be removed from your root. Sometimes a metal post is inserted into the canal to build up your tooth. Then, the canals are filled and sealed. Finally, the outside of the tooth is restored with a crown for normal functioning.
