Bridges

An artificial tooth that is kept in place by attaching it to two or more crowns placed on teeth surrounding the gap.

Benefit and Description: Bridges are used when one or more teeth are missing. Bridges help maintain normal function and bite. Porcelain, metals, or combinations are used to construct bridges.

Treatment: This procedure requires two visits. The first appointment is to prepare the teeth, take impressions that will be used to make the permanent bridge, and to make and apply a temporary bridge. The second appointment is to replace the temporary with the permanent bridge.

Problem Area Correction: A missing tooth that is causing problems with normal function.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • I've had a tooth missing for several years. Is there any reason for me to get a bridge now?
Yes, a bridge will help maintain the stability of the adjacent and opposing teeth. When not replaced, these teeth become compromised and have decreased longevity.
  • How long will the bridge last?
The American Dental Association says that bridges should last five years, but we like to think that if the dentist and patient maintain the area properly a bridge can last up to twenty five years.
